Carson City's Derrick Johnson wins Northern Nevada Masters Youth bowling tournament

Carson City's Derrick Johnson defeated Shane Shook 224-168 to become the champion at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament last Sunday, January 23. The tournament was held at Carson Lanes and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress Association.

Johnson qualified as the Division A winner for the stepladder finals after bowling 9 games (6 games to qualify and 3 games in the next round of qualifying) during the day. Each game was bowled on a different pair of lanes.

Shook qualified as the Division B winner after also bowling 9 games and also winning 3 more games in the stepladder series. The divisions are determined by averages. Each of them won a $150 scholarship for winning the division and Johnson earned an additional $50 scholarship for the championship.

In Division C, Aiden Melanaphy finished in first place after 6 games (3 games qualifier and 3 games semi-qualifier) and a stepladder final. Melanaphy also earned $150 scholarship with his win.

Johnson also had the high game of the tournament with a 276 during the semi-final qualification round. In B Division, Landen Geiger had the high game with a 227. In C Division, Hunter Mueller had the high game with a 175.
